Our Mission
The Masonic Moonlight Journey is a pilgrimage experience for Freemasons traveling across Ohio to visit the state's twelve surviving Moonlight Lodges — historic fraternal halls that have met by the light of the full moon for nearly 200 years.
This project was created to document, celebrate, and promote Ohio's rare and dwindling moonlight lodge tradition — one of the most unique practices remaining in American Freemasonry. Of the thousands of Moon Lodges that once existed across North America, only approximately 129 survive. Ohio is home to 12 of them.
The journey is open to any Master Mason in good standing. Visit all 12 lodges, have your certificate signed and sealed at each one, and receive the official Masonic Moonlight Journey Certificate from the Grand Lodge of Ohio.
In the 19th century, rural American lodges faced a practical challenge: members had to travel on horseback or by wagon along unpaved country roads to attend meetings. Travel after dark was dangerous without the moon's light.
To solve this, lodges began scheduling their stated meetings on or near the date of the full moon each month — ensuring members could travel safely by moonlight. These lodges became known as "Moonlight Lodges."
As roads improved and electric lighting became widespread, the practical need disappeared. Yet some lodges kept the tradition alive simply out of reverence for their history. These are the lodges you'll find on the Moonlight Journey today.
The Masonic Moonlight Journey website was designed and built by FM Web Solutions, a web development project supporting Masonic education and outreach.
This platform exists to help Masons across Ohio — and visitors from around the country — discover, plan, and celebrate this extraordinary journey through Ohio's Masonic history.
