Freemasonry is the world's oldest and largest fraternal organization, with millions of members across more than 200 countries. Founded on the principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth, it uses the tools and traditions of the medieval stonemason's guild as allegories for moral and personal development.
At its heart, Freemasonry is about making good men better — encouraging members to reflect on their character, serve their communities, and build lasting bonds of brotherhood.
Modern speculative Freemasonry traces its roots to the early 1700s in England, though its ceremonial and philosophical origins are far older. The Grand Lodge of England was formed in 1717, and the institution spread rapidly through Europe and the American colonies.
Many of America's Founding Fathers were Freemasons, including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Paul Revere, and John Hancock. Ohio has been home to active Masonic lodges since territorial days, making it one of the richest states for Masonic history.
A Masonic lodge is the basic unit of Freemasonry — a local chapter of members who meet regularly. At stated meetings, lodges conduct business, confer degrees on new members, hear Masonic education lectures, and enjoy fellowship.
The three degrees of the Blue Lodge — Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason — use dramatic ritual and allegory drawn from the story of Solomon's Temple to teach moral lessons about integrity, charity, and the nature of life and death.
